Québec Health Survey of High School Students (QHSHSS)

    Type of survey

    Cross-sectional survey; representative at the provincial and regional levels, and at the local level for certain regions.

    Targeted population

    Students in Secondary 1 to 5 enrolled in the youth sector in Québec public and private, French- and English-language schools in 16 health regions, excluding students in vocational training centres, schools located in the regions of Nunavik and Terres-Cries-de-la-Baie-James, schools where the language of instruction is an Aboriginal language, schools outside the school board network (under the authority of another ministry or the federal government), and schools comprising at least 30% of students with handicaps or serious behavioural problems.

    Sample

    2022-2023: 70,800 students in 483 schools.

    2016-2017: 62,277 students in 465 schools.

    2010-2011: 63,196 students in 470 schools.

    Mental health and social adjustment: social environment (family, friends, school and community); self-esteem and social skills; violence; mental health; risk of dropping out of school.

    Physical health and lifestyle habits: perception of health status; respiratory health; work experiences and injuries; eating habits; recreational and transportation-related physical activity; sleep; weight status, body image and actions taken to manage weight; tobacco use; alcohol use; drug use; sexual behaviours and orientation (14 years and over).

    2010-2011
